Hello, I’m Clare McQuade; Herbalist, Celtic Shamanic practitioner and founder of stoneroot.
I have been a practising herbalist in Edinburgh for fifteen years, beginning my studies at Edinburgh’s Napier University in 2005 after experiencing the power of this medicine on my own healing journey. I was driven then as I am now by a desire to fully understand how the body functions in health and disease, how to look beneath the surface and uncover what drives ill health, and how to restore true balance.
I graduated with a degree in Herbal Medicine in 2009 and after a short break to have my first daughter, I began my herbal practice at Napiers Herbal Dispensary.
My degree programme approached herbal medicine from a scientific perspective; an approach I am grateful to have learnt and return to as an anchor within my practice still now, providing a framework for safety in prescribing alongside medications or with complex diagnoses.
Over my years in practice though I found myself drawn towards an energetic study of plants and people and prescribing from a more intuitive space as well, based on the indivudual person in front of me, their nature and constitution.
Integrating the scientific and energetic principles in my practice now allows me to draw from both of these pools of knowledge and provide a more holistic approach to those I work with.
In 2016, after receiving guidance from two wise women I began my journey into Shamanic Medicine with a year of personal exploration. It was a truly expansive year; changing my perception and understanding of many things in life, including my herbal practice. I was honoured to continue my study towards practitioner certification with Mark & Claudia at The Edinburgh Shamanic Centre over the following two years.
These years deepened my connection with the world around me. The land, trees, plants, waters, and seasons. Though their teachings are rooted in Native American and Brazilian Shamanic traditions and learning from these ancient and long held traditions is deeply imprtant, as I grew into closer relationship with my own lands, I was drawn to integrate the medicines, natural cycles, and ancient beliefs from these lands into my shamanic practice. This is what ‘celtic’ shamanism means to me.
I continue to deepen my knowledge in both herbal medicine and celtic shamanism through seminars, courses, my own study and practices.
To work with these medicine ways and to walk beside others as they navigate their healing paths is a true honour and one I am very grateful for.
